Olson/De Cari Duo on Song and Science

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science.” — Albert Einstein

The Olson/De Cari Duo is actively creating new music for voice and guitar through their Science/Music Commissioning Project, which seeks to illuminate the human side of science through song and celebrate the insights of a science-informed worldview. This concert is a CD release concert of the three song cycles commissioned by the Duo.

Science/Music Commissioning Project

The Project’s first song cycle, Abyss of the Stars: A Mass for Voice and Guitar, was written by composer Terry Champlin. The second piece in the science/music project, Scientiphilicity, was written by harpsichordist, organist and composer Thomas Donahue. And the Project’s third set of songs was composed by Frank Wallace. The six-movement song cycle, entitled Men, Women and Molecules, sets poems by Roald Hoffmann, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist at Cornell University. The poems explore life, love, and human relationships with insight and humor, from the unique perspective of a scientist.

I had the pleasure of meeting them last summer in Glasgow Scotland to coach their performance and recording of my Duo Sonata #1. It is the first recording and forms part of their new album Eyes to the Future. I loved working with these responsive young gentleman and am impressed with the results of their debut album, which came out at the beginning of this year.

Listen and Purchase

Form and Structure

As a composer, form is the most important element of a piece of music to me. Fine detail is essential, but the first job of the performer as well as the writer is to convey form, structure, long line and contrast. I live in New England and the form of the seasons imposes itself on an almost daily basis. Our lives here revolve around the demands of the changing climate. And so Eyes to the Future also revolves round and round. 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 +3.

The CD begins with three appealing works by Philip Houghton. They essentially form a sonata, using mostly modal elements. The CD continues with the iconic atonal work of Schoenberg Sechs Kleine Klavierstück, the three movement modal Duo Sonata #1 by yours truly, a single atonal work by Akiri Miyoshi; and finally the third modal group, Sonata Fantasia by Dusan Bogdanovich.

Exploring the detail

Derelict Hand’s variety of dynamics and articulation is impressive. They are clearly thinking and feeling in depth, exploring every piece in detail while conveying the grand structure through that very detail. As should be, lyrical elements are lovingly wrought while rhythmic sections are played with hard driving direction. There is strumming aplenty with the accompanying desire to tap one’s foot in all three third movements. That brings great excitement to their respective conclusions. The slow Lament by Houghton is full of longing and played with beautiful restraint while the spacious Schoenberg has both humor and a solemn spirituality.

Eyes to the Future

My only suggestions for future efforts are on the technical side and admittedly lean toward my personal preference. I have a passion for substantial natural reverb and traditional guitars and strings. Slow movements could use more space. The ensemble’s timing is fine, but the music needs to longer in the air longer. I like to say that great guitars are beautiful things, but great halls are vastly more important and underrated.

My other complaint is that aggressive movements are occasionally too hard or harsh, but this seems to be primarily the individual style of guitar (and/or choice of string). In both high and low tessituras, the guitars don’t seem to be able to handle the drive and musical ambition of the players.

Passion and commitment

The obvious must be mentioned, which is to say that Derelict Hands is clearly committed to the future of the guitar. They must be highly praised for their commitment to this goal by making their debut CD all new music. There is much to enjoy here on first listening and there is also the challenge that still remains to give atonal expression a fair chance. While some of my own compositions have atonal elements, I admit to not being a big fan of purely atonal music. Nor am I as educated in the system as I should be. Nevertheless, Derelict Hands makes a convincing case. I go back to my earlier statement on form – that in this context, the two pieces of this nature stand as reflective, spiritual, even natural (“existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind.”) in their seeming chaos.

Bravo – highly recommended.

I’m slowly exploring new friends I met on my recent tour of Germany and Holland, truly a feast of beautiful people. Today I mention Felix Justen, who I encountered promoting his new guitar support at the Berlin International Guitar Academy & Festival. It’s a very simple and effective design – check it out. Felix can be heard solo in this lovely work by Diabelli.

Given our mutual interest in song, Felix and I had much to talk about, including his long and very productive relationship with Elizabeth Parcells as The Duo for Voice and Guitar. At this link you will find the extensive catalogue of their recordings as well as biographical information on both artists. Elizabeth sadly passed away in 2005 from a battle with colorectal cancer. I single out this piece as a memoriam to a wonderful singer. Please read her history at her site – I am humbled, but glad to know of this great woman even in spirit only. Thank you Felix for introducing me to her and for your work together.
